· For SLP applicants in 2009 and beyond, it is required
that you successfully complete these 5 courses before applying
to our Program.
For Au.D. applicants, you may apply prior to completion
of the courses, but you will be required to take at least
Introduction to Audiology and Speech and Hearing
Science prior to beginning the program.
Where can I take the required prerequisite
courses?
· You can take these courses at Northeastern. We
offer them as graduate cross-registration courses through
our undergraduate program. Check the Northeastern registrar's
website for up-to-date information on course offerings.
Note: you must register as a Special Student (see
http://www.northeastern.edu/bouve/pdfs/Application_Procedur.pdf
for more details). You may also call the Bouvè Graduate
Admissions Office, 617-373-2708, for registration.
· You can also take the courses at any college or
university that has an ASHA accredited program.
How many students are in your program?
· Our Program is fairly small. The Speech-Language
Pathology Program has about
40-45 incoming graduate students per year. The Audiology
Program has about 8-9
incoming graduate students per year. As a result, students
and faculty get to know each other very well, and students
become friends for life. At Northeastern, you have all of
the advantages of a large university campus, including facilities
you would expect to find at a major urban university, along
with all of the advantages of a small, intimate program.
Where can I find information about
the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SLPA) program?
· Go to: http://www.slpa.neu.edu.
Here, you can find information about our curriculum, clinic,
faculty, etc. Please visit this site for all your SLPA Program
questions. Our program is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association.
Do I need to take the Graduate Record
Exam (GRE)?
· The GREs are a required part of the application
process. A combined score of
greater then a 1000 is needed, with a verbal score of 400
or greater and a
quantitative score of 500 or greater. The scores must be
sent directly from ETS
to Northeastern University.
What sort of financial support does
the Program offer?
· We have available a number of Northeastern University
Teaching Assistants (NUTA).
These provide students with about 6 course credits for which
they work with
faculty on research, clinical work, or administration for
7 hours per week.
· There are also Stipended Graduate Assistants (SGAs)
that provide tuition
remission and a stipend in return for 20 hours of work per
week.
· Dean's Scholarships are offered to students based
on academic performance;
these provide tuition remission. Put your best foot forward
and apply!
· Students are often hired by faculty to work on
their research grants. These
funds usually provide a stipend as well as course credit.
You should check out
the faculty's interests and research areas and see whose
work interests you and
fits with your experience. Send that faculty a vita and
letter of interest and
set up an appointment to meet.
