Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Program Clinics 1-4 Overview

Northeastern University (NU) Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) graduate students complete four clinic courses and accompanying seminar courses as part of their Program of Studies.  Being an ASHA- accredited program, these four Clinics meet ASHA guidelines for variety and quantity of clinical training experiences.  The typical timeline for successful completion of these is as follows:

SLAG415: Clinic 1 &

SLAG414: Clinic Seminar

SLAG416: Clinic 2

& Clinic Seminar

SLAG417: Clinic 3

& Clinic Seminar

SLAG418:

Clinic 4

& Clinic Seminar

*Non-SLP Undergraduate students take SLPG107 Clinical Procedures in Fall 1.  SLPG107 does not count toward the credits needed for the Masters Degree.

General Clinics Information:

Department on-campus clinical supervisors and external placement coordinators/supervisors work with students to provide them with opportunities to earn the minimum ASHA-specified 375 hours of diagnostic and therapeutic experiences across ages and disorders by the time of the student’s successful completion of the SLP Graduate Program of Studies.  Completion of a required public school placement helps students become eligible for state educator licensure.

Each Clinic Course has a mandatory seminar component associated with it.  Students’ Clinic Course grades are based on their attendance, completion of assignments, and performance in both.

Academic courses are offered in late afternoon and evening slots so that students are available days for NU Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic (NUSLHC) and off-campus clinical assignments.

Some placements require students to interview for clinical placements at their sites.  Students are expected to professionally represent themselves and Northeastern University during interviews and all clinical interactions.  Many of our external placements are located outside Boston. Some of these are available by public transportation. Many require travel by car. It is the student's responsibility to arrange her/his own transportation to assigned external placement sites.

Clinics 1-4 Brief Description:

SLAG415 Clinic 1:  During Clinic 1, a student typically evaluates and/or treats pediatric clients in the NUSLHC and participates in a community-based language literacy program in a nearby elementary school.  On average, students should be available a minimum of three days per week throughout the semester.  The seminar component requires attendance at on-campus seminar meetings held 1-2 times weekly.

SLAG416 Clinic 2, SLAG417 Clinic 3, and SLAG418 Clinic 4:  During Clinics 2-4, a student is typically assigned to off-campus educational and medical placements working with individuals presenting with various disorders across the lifespan.  Each student’s placements vary based on individual needs and interests as well as needs of the assigned placement.  A student may also be assigned to be part of a diagnostic team and/or treat in the NUSLHC.  On average, students should be available a minimum of three days per week throughout the semester for Clinic assignments.  The seminar component built in to each of these Clinics requires attendance at on-campus seminar meetings held once weekly.
